Overall Overview:

According to data from Hurun Research Institute, there will be 1,453 unicorn companies in the world in 2024, distributed in 53 countries and 291 cities. The United States ranks first with 703 companies, China ranks second with 340 companies, and India ranks third with 67 companies.

Rupert Hoogewerf, Chairman and Chief Researcher of Hurun Report, said: "In the past year, a new unicorn was born every two days around the world, bringing the total number of known unicorns in the world to a new record of nearly 1,500. Despite the pressure on economic growth, China still had more than one new unicorn born every week in the past year."

List changes:

Compared with 2023, 37 companies have "upgraded" and exited the global unicorn list, of which 29 were listed (18 from China, including representative companies such as Jitu Express), and 8 were acquired.

In 2024, the total value of unicorns worldwide will be US$4.6 trillion. Compared with 2023, the value of 430 unicorn companies will increase, including 171 new faces.

Among the top ten unicorns in the world in 2024, there are three new faces: OpenAI, Canva and Binance. Telegram and Revolut, which ranked in the top ten last year, fell to the top 30, and Cainiao Network fell to the top 50.

Industrial Distribution:

Fintech, software services and AI are the three main tracks for unicorns. AI surpassed e-commerce this year and ranked third. In the past year, the industries most changed by unicorns were financial services, enterprise management solutions, healthcare and retail.

When broken down by country, American unicorns are mainly distributed in the software services, financial technology, artificial intelligence and health technology industries, while China's unicorns are in the artificial intelligence, semiconductor and new energy industries, and the rest of the world's unicorns are in the financial technology and e-commerce industries.

It is worth noting that there is a type of unicorn enterprise that has developed rapidly recently, which is a platform for consumer evaluation. For example, China's Xiaohongshu is worth 100 billion RMB, and the United States' Red Ventures and the recently listed Reddit are both worth more than 70 billion RMB. Interestingly, the names of these three companies are all related to Red.

Age of company:

According to statistics from the Hurun Research Institute, the average age of unicorn companies worldwide is 10 years old. This means that if you want to start a business today, your goal should be to "become a unicorn" by 2034.

The average age of unicorn founders is 45, which means they started their businesses at the average age of 35.
