Zeng Xi

（1861～1930）

From Hengyang, Hunan

Politician, educator, calligrapher and painter in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China

He lectured at Hengyang Shigu Academy and Hanshou Longchi Academy

In 1915, Zeng Xi moved to Shanghai and made a living by selling calligraphy, painting, poetry and prose and teaching students.

Zeng Xi was an important calligrapher of the stele style in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China.

People at that time called him and Li Ruiqing "Zeng in the South and Li in the North".

Together with Wu Changshuo, Huang Binhong and Li Ruiqing, he is known as one of the "Four Demons of the Sea".

Zhang Daqian, Xie Bin, Kang Hesheng, Xiao Qian and Ma Zonghuo were all his disciples.

In 1919, Zhang Daqian returned to Shanghai from Japan and became a disciple of Zeng Xi. He named Zhang Yuan and Ji Yuan according to the dream of Zhang's mother when she gave birth to Zhang, and devoted himself to teaching. Later, Zhang Daqian's fiancée died of illness, and he was desperate and went to Ningbo to convert to Buddhism. Zeng Xi carefully guided Zhang Daqian and took him to Huangshan to see the pillow stone clouds and mist. As the teacher who benefited Zhang Daqian the most in his life, he later introduced Zhang Daqian to Li Ruiqing as his teacher.

On July 4, 1930, Zeng Xi died of illness in Shanghai at the age of 70. Zhang Daqian carried the coffin to his mentor's hometown, built a hut next to the tomb, and observed mourning for a month before passing away with all filial piety.
