"This move represents Activision's commitment to innovation and development in multiple areas within the academic and research community, including AI learning, while driving advancements in game development," the company said.

The open-sourcing of the map will have ripple effects that will extend beyond Call of Duty and even the gaming industry. Disney Pixar's chief technology officer said in a press release that the dataset "marks a major milestone for the industry," claiming that "this move not only paves the way for groundbreaking research in the fields of environment geometry and scene construction, but also embodies the collaborative spirit necessary for innovation in our field."

Caldera is one of the largest and most complex datasets in the history of the entire Call of Duty series, and is also the first major asset in the history of the series to be open sourced. The 4GB dataset contains more than 5 million meshes, more than 28 million primitives, more than 1 billion point instances, as well as in-game character paths and time samples showing how players behave on the map.
