In the first half of 2024, the communications industry will operate basically smoothly. Telecommunications business revenue will grow steadily, emerging business revenue will maintain double-digit growth, the construction of new infrastructure such as 5G, gigabit optical networks, and the Internet of Things will be promoted in an orderly manner, the number of network connected users will grow steadily, and mobile Internet access traffic will maintain a rapid growth trend.

I. Overall Operation

Telecommunications business revenue achieved positive growth, and the total volume of telecommunications business maintained a double-digit growth rate.In the first half of the year, the total revenue from telecommunications services reached RMB 894.1 billion, a year-on-year increase of 3%, a decrease of 1.5 percentage points from the first quarter. The total volume of telecommunications services calculated at the same price as last year increased by 11.1% year-on-year.


Revenue from fixed Internet broadband services grew steadily.In the first half of the year, the three basic telecommunications companies achieved Internet broadband business revenue of 136.5 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.4%, accounting for 15.3% of telecommunications business revenue, an increase of 0.4 percentage points from the first quarter, driving the growth of telecommunications business revenue by 0.8 percentage points.

Revenue from mobile data traffic business fell slightly.In the first half of the year, the three basic telecommunications companies achieved mobile data traffic business revenue of 328 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 2.3%, accounting for 36.7% of telecommunications business revenue.

Revenue from emerging businesses grew rapidly.The three basic telecommunications companies actively developed emerging businesses such as IPTV, Internet data centers, big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. In the first half of the year, they achieved a total business revenue of 227.9 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 11.4%, accounting for 25.5% of telecommunications business revenue, driving the growth of telecommunications business revenue by 2.7 percentage points. Among them, cloud computing and big data revenues increased by 13.2% and 58.6% year-on-year respectively, and the Internet of Things business revenue increased by 12.5% ​​year-on-year.


Voice service revenue continued to decline.In the first half of the year, the three basic telecommunications companies achieved fixed voice and mobile voice business revenues of 9.63 billion yuan and 55.24 billion yuan, up 0.8% and down 3.4% year-on-year respectively, accounting for 7.3% of telecommunications business revenues, a year-on-year decrease of 0.4 percentage points.

II. Development of Telecommunications Users

The number of fixed broadband access users has grown steadily, and the number of gigabit users has continued to expand.As of the end of June, the total number of fixed Internet broadband access users of the three basic telecommunications companies reached 654 million, a net increase of 18.1 million households over the end of last year. Among them, the number of fixed Internet broadband access users with access speeds of 100Mbps and above reached 620 million households, accounting for 94.8% of the total number of users; the number of fixed Internet broadband access users with access speeds of 1000Mbps and above reached 187 million households, a net increase of 24.16 million households over the end of last year, accounting for 28.6% of the total number of users, an increase of 1.2 percentage points over the first quarter. Driven by the continued growth of high-speed users, the average household access bandwidth reached 487.6Mbps/household, a year-on-year increase of 17.9%.


The scale of mobile phone users has grown steadily, and the number of 5G users has developed rapidlyAs of the end of June, the total number of mobile phone users of the three basic telecommunications companies and China Radio and Television [Note 1] reached 1.777 billion, a net increase of 24.01 million from the end of last year. Among them, 5G mobile phone users reached 927 million, a net increase of 105 million from the end of last year, accounting for 52.4% of mobile phone users, an increase of 2.6 percentage points from the first quarter.


The number of cellular Internet of Things users is growing rapidly, and the number of IPTV users (Internet TV) is increasing steadily.As of the end of June, the three basic telecommunications companies had developed 2.529 billion cellular IoT terminal users, a net increase of 197 million over the end of last year, accounting for 58.9% of the number of mobile network terminal connections (including mobile phone users and cellular IoT terminal users). The total number of IPTV (Internet TV) users reached 405 million, a net increase of 3.87 million over the end of last year.


3. Use of Telecommunication Services

Mobile Internet traffic maintained a rapid growth momentum, with the DOU value exceeding 18GB per household in June.In the first half of the year, the cumulative mobile Internet traffic [see Note 1] reached 160.4 billion GB, a year-on-year increase of 12.6%, and the growth rate fell by 2 percentage points year-on-year. As of the end of June, the number of mobile Internet users [see Note 1] reached 1.549 billion, a net increase of 24.6 million households over the end of last year. In June, the average mobile Internet access traffic per household (DOU) reached 18.15GB/household/month, a year-on-year increase of 8.1%, and an increase of 1.37GB/household/month over the same period last year.


Mobile phone call volume declined slightly, while the growth rate of mobile text messaging business revenue turned positive.In the first half of the year, the outgoing call duration of mobile phones reached 1,068.8 billion minutes, a year-on-year decrease of 4.6%; the outgoing call duration of fixed-line phones reached 37.97 billion minutes, a year-on-year decrease of 3.4%. In the first half of the year, the national mobile SMS business volume increased by 0.5% year-on-year; the mobile SMS business revenue increased by 2% year-on-year.


4. Communication Capabilities

The total length of optical cable lines has increased steadily.As of the end of June, the total length of optical cable lines in China reached 67.12 million kilometers, a net increase of 2.799 million kilometers over the end of last year. Among them, access network optical cables, local network relay optical cables and long-distance optical cable lines accounted for 62.7%, 35.6% and 1.7% respectively, and the proportion of local network relay optical cables fell by 0.1 percentage point year-on-year.


The construction of gigabit fiber-optic broadband networks is progressing steadily.As of the end of June, the number of Internet broadband access ports nationwide reached 1.17 billion, a net increase of 33.54 million over the end of last year. Among them, fiber-optic access (FTTH/O) ports reached 1.13 billion, a net increase of 35.42 million over the end of last year, accounting for 96.6% of Internet broadband access ports. As of the end of June, the number of 10GPON ports with gigabit network service capabilities reached 25.97 million, a net increase of 2.951 million over the end of last year.


5G network construction continues to advance.As of the end of June, the total number of mobile phone base stations in my country reached 11.88 million, a net increase of 265,000 from the end of last year. Among them, the total number of 5G base stations reached 3.917 million, a net increase of 540,000 from the end of last year, accounting for 33% of the total number of mobile base stations, an increase of 2.4 percentage points from the first quarter.


V. Regional Development

The gap in gigabit user penetration rates among regions has narrowed.As of the end of June, the penetration rates of fixed broadband access users with access speeds of 1000Mbps and above in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions were 29.4%, 29.3%, 28.6% and 20.2% respectively, and the difference between the highest and lowest penetration rates in each region was 9.2%, a decrease of 1 percentage point from the first quarter. The penetration rate of broadband access users with access speeds of 1000Mbps and above in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region was 29.8%, the same as in the first quarter; the penetration rate of broadband access users with access speeds of 1000Mbps and above in the Yangtze River Delta region was 28.3%, an increase of 1.2 percentage points from the first quarter.

The central region leads in 5G construction and applications.As of the end of June, the number of 5G base stations in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions reached 1.741 million, 887,000, 1.043 million and 245,000 respectively, accounting for 34%, 34.6%, 30.5% and 31.6% of the total number of mobile phone base stations in the region; the number of 5G mobile phone users reached 406 million, 219 million, 241 million and 61 million respectively, accounting for 52.9%, 52.9%, 52% and 49.5% of the total number of mobile phone users in the region. As of the end of June, the number of 5G base stations in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Yangtze River Delta region reached 367,000 and 767,000 respectively, accounting for 35.4% and 34.5% of the total number of mobile phone base stations in the region; the number of 5G mobile phone users reached 81.05 million and 166.89 million respectively, accounting for 54% and 51.8% of the total number of mobile phone users in the region.

The mobile Internet access traffic in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Yangtze River Delta region reached 12.13 billion GB and 27.88 billion GB, respectively, up 17.8% and 6.1% year-on-year. In June, the average mobile Internet access traffic (DOU) per household in eight provinces, including Tibet, Qinghai, Ningxia, Hainan, Xinjiang, Yunnan, Hunan and Guizhou, exceeded 20GB/household/month; the difference between the highest and lowest DOU values ​​in each province was 16.3GB/household/month, an increase of 2GB/household/month compared with the same period last year.
