Julian Mero SmithJulian Merrow-Smith, born in Buckinghamshire, England in 1959, is one of the most dynamic painters in Europe today. He currently lives in Provence, southern France. His artistic career is full of brilliant achievements and unique creative processes. From early portraits to later still lifes and landscapes, his works have been widely acclaimed worldwide.

Merrow-Smith’s art education began at North Oxfordshire College of Art, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. During his studies, he studied under art masters such as sculptor Anish Kapoor and painter Paul Hampton, and was deeply influenced by them. These experiences laid a solid foundation for his artistic creation, allowing him to reach new heights in both technique and vision.

As a skilled portrait painter, Merrow-Smith's work is often exhibited by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and has appeared in many exhibitions in the UK, France and the United States. He has twice won the BP Portrait Prize from the National Portrait Gallery in London (1999 and 2017), which is undoubtedly a high recognition of his excellent skills. His portraits not only accurately capture the appearance of the characters, but also explore the inner emotions and personality of the characters.

After moving to the mountain village of Crillon-le-Brough in Provence in southern France, Merrow-Smith turned his focus to landscape and still life painting. His "open-air" landscapes were very popular, showing the beautiful scenery and unique style of Provence.

In February 2005, Merrow-Smith began a daily painting project called "Postcards from Provence," and as of April 2017, he had completed more than 2,600 paintings. These paintings record the daily life and natural beauty of Provence through delicate brushstrokes and rich colors.

"Postcards from Provence" not only attracted the attention of a large number of art lovers, but was also published in well-known media such as The New York Times, The Times, USA Today, The Guardian and The Sunday Telegraph. These works show his keen perception of light and shadow and his unique observation of the details of life, making him famous all over the world.

Merrow-Smith has a great reputation as a still life painter. In 2002, Cunard Cruises commissioned him to paint a series of large still lifes and several landscapes for the Queen Mary 2. These works not only demonstrated his superb skills, but also brought him more commissions, further consolidating his position in the international art world.

Julian Merrow Smith, a self-taught British painter, has demonstrated his profound artistic skills and unique creative style through his outstanding portraits, still lifes and landscapes. Merrow Smith's artistic journey is not only the inheritance and innovation of traditional art, but also an affectionate record of daily life and natural beauty.
