Many people who study calligraphy have a "national exhibition dream", which is not only a recognition of their calligraphy skills, but also an important opportunity to become famous. However, the award criteria of the national exhibition are becoming more and more elusive. Those who write regular script and running script seriously may not necessarily be favored by the judges, and may even be labeled as "printed" or "vulgar writing".

Influenced by this, many people began to "take a different approach" and wrote works such as official script and cursive script to show their outstanding personality. However, this also led to the prevalence of the trend of "focusing on cursive script and neglecting regular script and regular script". Some calligraphy masters were criticized and despised by the judges of the National Exhibition, such as Ouyang Xun, Liu Gongquan, and especially Zhao Mengfu, who almost became the representatives of "vulgarity" and "flattering" in their mouths.

Although these judges disdained "Zhao's calligraphy", the majority of calligraphy lovers and the auction community still regard Zhao Mengfu's works as "treasures", and they are also recognized by the academic community as the best choice for learning calligraphy. Zhao Mengfu's authentic works have repeatedly sold at sky-high prices. On July 5, 2023, at the Beijing Poly "Yan Zhi Yu Gao" Spring Auction, his masterpiece of small regular script "Lin Huangting JingThe final transaction price was 182 million yuan, setting a record for the entire event.

The other is the one in the collection of Xiang Yuanbian in Poly. This work is of higher quality, the most complete content, and has the most seals. There are also inscriptions by various authors at the end of the volume. The "Lin Huangting Jing" currently on the market is generally the Palace Museum version. Although a few are Poly versions, they have taken the seals in the volume and the inscriptions at the end of the volume, and are not complete.

Zoomed in details

After much effort,For the first time, the entire volume of the Poly edition was reproduced in 12 colors, presenting you with this "visual feast". This post was written in the sixth year of the Yuan Dynasty (1302), and was originally kept by Xiang Yuanbian, who used the word "elephant" as the number in the Thousand Character Classic. At the end of the volume of Lin Huang Ting Jing, there are postscripts by Deng Wenyuan, Gong Kui and Gong Jing. In his postscript, Gong Jing explained that Zhao Mengfu's Lin Huang Ting Jing was copied from Zhong Shaojing's copy in the Tang Dynasty, combining the brushwork of Wang Xizhi and Zhong Yao. Xian Yushu once said: "Zi'ang's seal, official, regular, running and cursive scripts are the best of the contemporary era, and his small regular script is the best among all his calligraphy."

Compared with the "Palace Museum Edition", the Poly Edition has the date of signature

Zhao Mengfu's small regular script was inspired by the Jin, Tang and Song dynasties, especially the two Wangs, Zhong Shaojing, Chu Suiliang, Jiang Kui and others. The Huangting Jing was the model he studied all his life. This calligraphy is delicate and rich in movements. First, the momentum is taken in the air, then the pen is started along the tip, and after the pen is placed on the paper, the tip is adjusted and the strokes are mainly in the center. The strokes are graceful and varied, and the starting and ending points are twisted freely, which deeply captures the essence of Wang Xizhi.

Postscript by Deng Wenyuan

Some netizens watched this work and said, "Wang Xizhi traveled through time", the strokes and the word formation are quite Wei and Jin style, the charm is gorgeous and impressive. If you can copy it thoroughly, you will pass the level of small regular script.
