Recently, a number of Jinan University students spoke out on social media, saying that the school dormitories were full of mold, and the toilets and furniture were old and damaged to varying degrees. Some students suspected that the formaldehyde content in the dormitories exceeded the standard, and they had skin allergies, fever, and hospitalization, among other physical problems.

On the morning of July 17, a Chao News reporter called the duty phone number of the publicity department of Jinan University. The teacher who answered the phone responded: "The school is already following up on this situation, and the specific details will be based on the official announcement of the school. The teacher in charge has already gone on vacation, and I am not particularly clear about it." The reporter asked how the situation reported by the students was handled. The teacher who answered the phone said that the teacher in charge was not on duty that day and was not on summer vacation, and would continue to follow up on related work.

On the same day, Chao News reporter contacted a student named Xiao Lin (pseudonym) from Jinan University. He recalled to the reporter that the school informed them in mid-June that they would be moving their dormitories from the Huawen campus to the Shipai campus on July 13, "but they could not find out which building they would be moving to, and no specific arrangements were made." It was not until the morning of July 13 that the students checked out and arrived at the new dormitory that Xiao Lin was dumbfounded to find that the accommodation environment was terrible, "but there was no way to check out anymore."

According to Kobayashi, some students reported problems such as mold and rust to the school. Some students also suspected that the room was only painted two days ago and there were paint buckets left at the scene.

"Many students have no choice but to live there because they have already found summer internships in May and June and have to go to work." Xiaolin said that some students are feeling unwell, with fever, allergies, rashes, headaches, etc. In addition, the safety hazards of the dormitories, narrow corridors, and dirty items are also worrying.

Kobayashi said that the school had sent people to visit the students and asked them to fill out forms to state their demands, but the final replies were "there is no solution at the moment", "if it can't be solved now, just try your best", "everyone go home, let the room ventilate, and come back to live here when school starts", etc. It also stated that it would be impossible to meet all of the students' demands to change toilets and iron doors.

Another netizen who posted a message about the worrying dormitory conditions at Jinan University also confirmed Xiaolin's statement, saying that the dormitories were painted just the day before and they were allowed to move in the next day. Some dormitories with serious mold have not been dealt with yet and supplies have not been distributed.

In addition, the reporter searched and found that on the official website of the China Government Procurement Network, the "Jinan University Shipai Campus Student Dormitory Expansion Project (2024) Student Dormitory Furniture Procurement (0877-24GZTP4ZC0213) Winning Bid Announcement" published on June 18, 2024 showed that the names of the goods included four-person double-decker iron beds, bed boards, desks, wardrobes, student chairs, repaired wall cabinets, dismantling and moving of old wooden furniture, etc. The supplier was Guangzhou Dapeng Furniture Co., Ltd., and the winning bid amount was more than 4.58 million yuan.

Xiao Lin said that the desks and chairs in their dormitory were not new. "There were traces of spilled soup on the desks, but some looked relatively clean." The gaps in the dormitory cabinets were mostly moldy and hairy, and there were black spots in the drawers. "They (classmates) said it might be cockroach feces, and some said it was rat feces."

Afterwards, the reporter called the project manager to find out the situation, but no one answered the call. In addition, the reporter tried to call other company numbers, but was hung up.

Chao News reporters will continue to follow the development of the incident.
