A new game development studio called Blue Scarab Entertainment has been established in Stockholm, Sweden, and has raised $7 million in funding for its first project, an Unreal Engine 5 MMORPG.

This round of financing was led by NetEase Games, and other investors included Behold Ventures, Raw Fury founder Jonas Antonsson and Creandum founder Stefan Lindeberg.

Blue Scarab will be led by CEO Colin Cragg and CTO Enno Rehling, both of whom have extensive MMO experience: Cragg directed and designed Funcom's Mayhem Online, while Rehling also worked as a programmer on the same game as well as the EverJourney: Dreamfall project.

Other notable team members include DICE veteran Craig Morrison, who serves as studio director, Bad Divers 2’s community director Ashley Nicolette, and Bad Divers 2’s systems designer Guillaume Lhoyer, who serves as lead game designer at the studio.

The studio currently has 20 full-time employees, all of whom have participated in the development of online MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft.

According to studio director Morrison, the studio's first project will combine the casual escapism and true crime genres, with the goal of "melting and evolving previous gaming and media experiences into something completely new within this already expanded community."
