OpenAI competitor Anthropic launched the Claude Android app on Tuesday, hoping to convince users to abandon ChatGPT by making Claude available on more platforms.

The Claude Android app will work the same way as the iOS version released in May, giving users free access to Anthropic’s best-in-class AI model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, with upgrades through Anthropic’s Pro and Team subscription plans. Users will be able to sync their conversations with Claude across devices and can upload photos or files to the app for real-time image analysis.

The Claude Android app also includes real-time language translation, which Anthropic hopes will be a strong draw for people to open the app. In addition, the app allows corporate customers to access their Claude accounts on mobile devices.

Analysts believe that although Anthropic claims that its AI model is technically comparable to OpenAI and Google's products, the startup still faces difficulties in attracting consumers. The Claude iOS app received a lukewarm response during its launch two months ago, with a total of 157,000 global downloads in the first week of its launch, while the ChatGPT iOS app was installed 480,000 times in the first five days of its launch.
