On the news front, during the past weekend, the 2024 summer season (June 1-August 31) achieved multiple milestones. Led by domestic films such as "Silent Killer", "A Small Shop at the Edge of the Clouds", and "Catching Dolls", the number of moviegoers (including pre-sales) during the summer season exceeded 100 million, and the box office (including pre-sales) during the season exceeded 4 billion and maintained a growth trend. On Sunday, the market achieved a single-day box office of over 300 million yuan for the first time. Industry insiders pointed out that this year's summer season has a rich variety of themes, and there are still heavy content reserves waiting to be released in the second half of the season, which will drive the market to further heat up.

Specifically, as of July 15, the data from Lighthouse Professional Edition showed that the total box office (including pre-sales) of the 2024 summer season exceeded 4.2 billion yuan, and the top three movies in the box office list were "Silent Killer", "A Small Shop at the Edge of the Clouds", and "Catching Dolls", which earned 870 million yuan, 490 million yuan, and 400 million yuan respectively. With many films locked in the summer schedule, many listed film companies have also recently handed in their first-half performance report cards. Among them, Wanda Film said in its performance forecast that it expects net profit attributable to shareholders of listed companies to be 100 million to 130 million yuan in the first half of the year. With the arrival of the summer schedule, the market is still confident that the industry will continue to recover in the second half of the year; Bona Film Group said in its performance forecast that its film business has improved compared with the same period last year, and it is expected to have a net loss of 108 million to 153 million yuan in the first half of 2024. However, the net loss in the same period last year was about 265 million yuan, and the loss has narrowed.

Chen Jin, a data analyst at Lighthouse Professional Edition, pointed out that this year's summer movie season has rich themes and diverse genres, which can meet the viewing needs of different audiences. In previous years, mid-to-late July has always been the peak period of the summer market, so we expect the summer movie season to continue its upward momentum and usher in a new peak.

"As the traditional peak season for movie-watching, the surge in box office and moviegoers during the summer vacation not only reflects the audience's strong demand for high-quality domestic films, but also indicates that the film market is expected to continue to maintain its growth momentum throughout the year." Film critic Liu Chang further said that the good momentum of the summer vacation is not only due to the outstanding performance of several popular domestic films, but also to the concerted efforts of the entire film industry chain and the positive feedback from the market.
