Huangnan Prefecture's new generation Doppler weather radar.

We are about to enter the critical flood prevention period of "the end of July and the beginning of August". On July 15, the China Meteorological Administration's new generation weather radar business software (ROSE3.0) started business trial operation at 123 radar stations across the country, including Beijing Haituoshan and Handan, Hebei. It will continue to improve the accuracy and recognition rate of meteorological radar quantitative precipitation estimation products and four severe convection automatic alarm products such as hail, tornadoes, thunderstorms, gale, and short-term heavy rainfall, helping to build the first line of defense for meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation.

The new generation weather radar business software is developed by the China Meteorological Administration's radar engineering project for the new generation of weather radar station business applications. On December 1, 2023, ROSE2.1 has been operational in all types of weather radar stations across the country. In June this year, ROSE3.0 passed the expert test. The test results show that all functions of ROSE3.0 have met the requirements.

Compared with ROSE2.1, ROSE3.0 has three major upgrades, including software functions, domestic operating system support, and severe convective weather monitoring and alarm capabilities. Especially in terms of improving severe convective weather monitoring and alarm capabilities, in order to improve product recognition rates, ROSE3.0 has optimized station terminal data quality control and product algorithms, and has made improvements in radar quantitative estimation of precipitation products and four severe convective automatic alarm products such as hail, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and short-term heavy precipitation. According to the plan and requirements, the accuracy of radar quantitative estimation of precipitation products increased by 3%, the recognition rate of tornadoes increased by 2%, and the recognition rate of thunderstorms increased by 6%. Among them, the accuracy of radar quantitative estimation of precipitation reached 81.26%, the recognition rate of tornadoes reached 78%, and the recognition rate of thunderstorms reached 71.39%.

The trial operation of ROSE3.0 will last for three months until October 15. During the trial operation, the meteorological department will scientifically evaluate the availability, stability, accuracy and business support capabilities of ROSE3.0 in actual business, and make good evaluations of ROSE3.0's radar quantitative precipitation estimation products and four severe convection automatic alarm products such as hail, tornado, thunderstorm gale, and short-term heavy precipitation.
