on september 8, the reporter learned from harbin institute of technology (shenzhen) that the research group of professor he sisi and associate professor zhou jia from the school of science of the university has achieved breakthrough results in the field of nitrate electrocatalytic conversion.a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the utilization and efficient conversion of nitrate to ammonia in wastewater has been designed, providing a new approach for wastewater treatment and low-carbon energy production.the relevant research results were recently published in nature communications.
electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (nra) is considered to be a low-cost and sustainable way to obtain ammonia energy, which can convert nitrate in industrial wastewater into clean energy ammonia.
in this study, researchers proposed a strategy to accelerate the nitrate electroreduction reaction to produce ammonia in low-concentration nitrates by using gradient concentration structure-driven design, and tested that the gradient-structured nra electrocatalyst had an ammonia production faraday efficiency of over 93% and an industrial-grade ammonia current density of 1.0 amperes per square centimeter at low nitrate concentrations in typical industrial wastewater (2000 ppm), while also having a stable working time of up to 720 hours.
at the same time, researchers also combined in-situ spectroscopy characterization and theoretical calculations to reveal the nra reaction mechanism of the catalyst. the membrane electrode device assembled based on this reaction mechanism can work stably for more than 100 hours at high current density.it is confirmed that the nra electrocatalyst has industrial potential.
